Abstract

Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast that causes cryptococcosis in humans and animals and is associated with there are several environmental sources, such as fruit decay, the feces of birds and bats, and plant debris. Among the varieties of Cryptococcus, the variety neoformans, found in pigeon droppings, is a major cause of mortality among immunocompromised individuals worldwide. However there are no recent studies on the ecology in the city of Sorocaba, located within the state of Sao Paulo. To search Saprophytic sources of Cryptococcus sp. In the Trough - SP, we collected 56 samples of pigeon at several places in the downtown area, such as streets, roofs of shops and metal structures of large tents trade. The confirmation of the fungus Cryptococcus sp. in bird feces was processed through mounting plates with the suspension of stool in sterile saline and ink in China (Nankin) overlaying a glass slide, a total of 78.4% of samples were positive for fungal agent.
